artistic journaling //

11:00 PM

I've never had the best luck with journaling. I used to try to keep a daily journal, one where I would record the various events of the day. But let's be honest: that's not very creative or fun.

And somehow, I've always been under the impression that journaling was just that--a daily account of your life. But there's so much more you can do with journaling creatively, and when I discovered that, I decided it was time to try it out again.

So HUGE THANK YOU to my best friend for forcing me to "ruin" the first page of this beautiful journal. If you weren't there to make me do it, I'd probably still be here staring at the blank page in abject fear. ;)

It's been a little less than two weeks since I started this journal, and I thought you all might want to see what I've been working on.

That's the date I wrote the poem, just in case you were wondering. ;)

I hope you enjoyed this peek into my journal! I'll definitely be working on it more this summer, so be on the lookout for another post like this in the future.

Have you ever tried artistic journaling before? (YOU SHOULD. It's so much fun!) Which page of mine did you like the best?

  1. Oh my goodness!!!!! Sooooo very beautiful! I love it! You are very talented, I loved the flower circle thingy (such professional wording, you can tell I know what I'm talking about ;P), and the whole idea of 'artistic journaling. You are very blessed to be so creative and talanted, I must admit, I'm a wee bit jealous! Also, I adore your handwriting on the poem. Is that nice handwriting you use when you are taking your time trying to make something nice or is that your natural normal quick jotting-down handwriting? Either way it's lovely!

    1. AHHHHHH LISSA THANK YOU SO MUCH!! *hugs you and your precious comment* You're the sweetest. <3 Haha, I know what you mean. *winks* (Psst, it's called a flower wreath in case you were curious. ;D)

D'AWWWWWW. That really means a lot to me! Honestly, it's something that I love doing--being creative. But I truly believe that EVERYONE is creative: whether they express that through drawing, music, problem solving, designing, cooking, writing...whatever. So you definitely have lots of creativity, and I'm sure you can do amazing things with it! ^_^

Yep, that is actually my normal handwriting that I used for writing the poem. THANK YOU SO MUCH, DEAR!!! I used to have rather messy handwriting a few years ago, but it has improved a lot recently. :)

Thanks again for the sweet comment! Kind words like these make all the work worth it. <3

    2. Aw! Well every word I said was true!! I actually found it what it was called right after I wrote that comment. You totally inspired me. That night after reading your post I went on pinterest and saved like a ton of ideas for artistic journaling and made my own notebook that night, and have been doing cool stuff in it since! It's so fun and perhaps I'll do my own post about it on my own blog. You totally inspired me and thank you for your encouragement! I agree!

Wow, that is some incredible handwriting, so beautiful!

You're very welcome and I hope your journal is still going well!

D'awww, you're too nice. Thank you!

I've added quite a few pages since then, so yes! Going very well! I'll have to do another post about my journal sometime soon. :)

  2. OOOOOHH!!!!! *squeals and high fives fellow artist* I loved this!! =D When I was younger, I used to draw in my journal too. ;) (and I actually still do sometimes!)
I liked the 'you smile with your eyes' picture, (hey, what Owl City song is that from?? Savannah loves Owl City songs, and so does Ariel, but I don't know if I've heard that one before.....?) and the first one. <333333
    Anyways, amazing job!!

    1. *high fives you back* THANK YOU!!! It's funny, I never even thought of drawing in journals until recently. You were ahead of the game, haha. ;)

Thanks! Eyes are one of my favorite things to draw. I find them really fascinating. ^_^ (It's from "The Real World," which is the song that got me into Owl City. It holds a special place in my Owl City adoring heart. <3)

      THANKS AGAIN, JAIDYN ELISE! <3333

    1. ASGDLDKSL. *flails* JAZZY (can I call you that?), YOU ARE SO SWEET. Gah! Thank you a million times over. BUT GIRL YOU SHOULD TOTALLY TRY IT. I'm serious. I'm definitely not a perfect artist, believe me. I made some mistakes in this journal already, haha. So even if you don't think you're a good artist--which you probably ARE--STILL TRY THIS OUT. It's just so freeing and fun...and you might end up loving it! :D

  8. MARY!! This is so beautiful!! I can't even.
I LOVE that you're such an artist. I just love it. Sometimes I wonder if doing something artistically or making something beautiful is worth it. I don't know if you ever feel this way, but DON'T because art blesses people! Thank you so much for sharing your art on your blog, and blessing all your readers.
I've never really clicked with "typical" journaling either, but I wonder if I should try this...

    1. ACK. Hanna, you never cease to uplift me! <3 I've just got to say, your comments mean the world to me.

AWWWWWWWW. I'm...literally speechless. Those words of encouragement are worth all the frustration I sometimes feel when I "mess up" my art. It means so much to know that what I'm doing has a purpose. So thank YOU for always taking time to leave these notes of encouragement and honesty. You are a special lady, Hanna. <3

(AND YES. You SHOULD try this! I'd recommend everyone give this a shot because it's so liberating to let your hands create something.)

    *faints from all the beauty*

MARY HORTON. THIS IS GORGEOUSNESS RIGHT HERE!!!!! PURE GORGEOUSNESS. Don't make me choose a favorite! The first page is just...SLDKJFL:JDS:LKJF. The wreath, the aesthetically pleasing colors, the words. SO MUCH LOVE. And then your beautifullll poem! And the HORSE. I love horses! And and and OWL CITYYYYY. MY PRECIOUS OWL CITY. <3333 This is all just...I can't. I LOVE.

I think it's brilliant that you're making an artistic journal! I've always been right with you in thinking a daily life journal is the only kind of journal. It's taken me yeeeeears to realize you can do WHATEVER with a journal. I keep a one sentence journal, in that I just choose one happy thing that happened that day and write a sentence about it. That way, I have a sentence about something good that happened for nearly every day of my life, and it helps me find the good in each day, no matter how bad the day may have seemed. But, sadly, one sentence a night is about all I do with journaling these days. XD

    1. CHRISTINE SMITH DON'T EVER CHANGE. <333 You have this way of always making me smile. ALWAYS. *hugs you*

GAHHHHH. I would say thank you...but that doesn't quite cover it. You are so precious. <3 (And I'm so glad you like it!! Is it weird that I actually thought of you while doing the Owl City page? You and Tracey came to mind while I was doing it, and I couldn't wait to show you. ^_^)

Saaaaaame. Life journaling was basically the only journaling in my vocabulary, haha. But I'm so glad I discovered this outlet of creativity! It's honestly one of my favorite ways to do art now. And that is really awesome, Christine! I think I remember you saying something about that. (I probably spotted it in a comments section that I stalked or something...ehehe. *coughs*) Seriously, that is a really encouraging thing to do. I do something kiiiind of similar actually; I write down one or two good memories from the day on a scrap of paper, put the date on it, and place it in my "memory jar." At the end of the year, I'll open it and reflect on all the blessings in 2017. :)

  10. THESE ARE AMAZING, MARY. You are so talented! I wish I was artistic, and trust me I've attempted many projects... buy drawing is just not my thing. I still try sometimes, if I'm really motivated to draw something, but it never turns out good. In the end, I think crafting is my strength in the artistic realm xD
